P1-01: Utilities and Applications
-----------------------------
#27838/0201 Disk DIR Printers Small Programs Disk
-----------------------------
DaLabeler 3.2 (DALABLR)
Neal, Robert
$10
lets you print a disk directory listing on labels, including up to five lines of
comments. The program is menu-driven and very slick looking. It can handle up to
66 file names on a label; edit the list of file names before printing the label
and you can override the volume label. It supports 4"x1.5" labels in addition to
3.5"x15/16". The printer configuration file comes set up for Epsons, but can be
easily modified to work with most printers.
DirP
Fisher, Stanley
$0
may be the first "sorted directory on a label" utility that will fit on 3.5"
disks. We like the ease with which this works: it reads the current
directory and treats any text on the DOS command line as a heading line for
the label.
DiskOver 4.6 (DISKOVR)
Caleb Computer Consultants
$20
prints an insert for a disk cover listing the files on the disk, including the
contents of ARC, ZIP and LBR files.
Disk Label Maker 1.31 (DSKLABL)
Hwang, Eric & Associates
$15
is a disk directory label printing utility. It can read standard and high
capacity disks and supports the two most popular label sizes.
FolDIR
Patton, Gavin S.
$10
will print a directory listing for a diskette on paper so that it can be
folded to form a disk sleeve. FolDIR will print sleeves for 5.25" or 3.5"
disks.
MiLabel 2.0
Haro, John M.
$10
reads a disk's directory and prints it on a label of almost any size that will
fit on a disk - seven sizes in all. Optionally, you use it to print notes
without reading the disk directory. You can also select file names NOT to be
printed. The only drawback is its long, annoying "shareware" screen. (Not on
this disk. Ask for disk #8599.)
NewLabel
is a disk directory label printing program. Those who program in BASIC can
customize this one. (Not on this Disk. Ask for disk #8019.)
Printed Disk Directory (PDD)
Gilbert, Raymond A.
$0
is a utility to print a sorted directory listing in such a format as to allow
the listing to be cut and inserted into the sleeve with the diskette.
Assembler source included. Program formerly known as "Cover".
PLabel
prints labels for diskettes on standard 3 1/2" x 15/16" mailing labels. It
prints the volume label, diskette, today's date, and more. Depending on the
number of files on the diskette, it may print just the file names, file names
and extensions, or file names, extensions and file size.
PssLbl 1.1a
Scott, Kevin A.
$25
is a menu driven diskette label printing utility, written entirely in
assembler. It allows you to print labels of just about any size on just about
any printer. You can have the filenames sorted before they are printed. You
can specify numerous options that control such features as the size of the
disk name when printed, whether leading zeros should be suppressed, whether
trailing blanks should be suppressed when the filenames are printed. Virtual
every print feature of the labels can be customized.
VolTag 2.13
Contech Systems
$10
is an application for printing informative, eye-pleasing labels for 3.5"
diskettes. It graphically displays the amount of free space left on each
diskette; it offers full Mouse support; up to 63 file names can be displayed
on each label; and either the diskette title or the volume label (your choice)
is printed along the "spine" of the label for easy identification of boxed or
stacked diskettes. Requires DOS 3+ and an IBM Graphics printer or compatible.

MasDIR
Stephan, Bob
$20
#27838/1140
combines directory sorting, disk label printing and disk cover programs. It
offers five ways to sort file names, four printing options without changing
printer settings, and listing directory files in 2, 4, and 6 columns.
Disklist
Bauernschub, John P. Jr. ASP
$25
#27838/3318
prints disk sleeve inserts showing directory contents. It works particularly
well on laser printers, including the ability to download users' soft fonts. It
provides 33 formats that print from one to six columns of file names with
options to include date, time and file size. It can print a border around a list
to be cut out, or omit the border for labels. It can list the files inside most
archive formats.
DiskMailer 1.1
Bryan E. Taylor
$20
#27838/4436
creates floppy disk mailers and sleeves. A built-in editor is included to modify
the information to be printed on the mailer. Output can be previewed on screen.
-----------------------
7051/0689 Banners/Signs Small Programs Disk
-----------------------
Alphabet (ALPHABT)
contains a file for each letter, A-Z. Each file contains a full-page
representation of the letter (turned sideways) so that by sending a string of
these letter-files to the printer, you can make a banner.
Bannerific 2.1 (BANNRIF)
Mission Technologies
$17
lets you produce large banners on your printer. All IBM PC keyboard characters
may be used. The size of the characters produced on the printer is variable, and
may be as large as the width of your computer paper. You can make vertical as
well as horizontal banners on any printer. You can choose the height and width
of each letter, so you can make banners many sizes. Get some neon colored banner
paper from PsL Retail Products and give this a try. Banner paper is unperforated
so that your banners do not pull apart.
BigLetters (BIGLET)
Hoffmann, Robert
$0
prints out text in big letters formed with ASCII block characters. Output can
go to the screen or a file. It doesn't have the font capabilities of BigText,
but is easier to use.
Big-Text 1.6 (BIG-TXT)
Ford, Nelson, ASP
$15
prints text using large fonts created by combinations of characters from the
IBM character set. Big-Text can be used for making signs, posters, name tags,
etc. Several font files come with Big-Text, including a 6-line by 6-space
character font created with IBM block characters and one created with IBM
line-drawing characters. At normal printer settings, these fonts will print
out one inch high. Instructions are included for creating your own fonts of
from two to 20 printer lines high. Font files can be changed from within the
text file.
DM-Banner 2.1 (DMBANNR)
Morgan, Dwight
$10
prints large banners. One of the interesting features of this banner maker is
that you can specify a line of text to be used in creating the letters instead
of just a single letter. The author is no longer at the address provided in
the documentation.
Large
Nopper, Bruce A.
$25
is for the visually handicapped. This program reads a text file of up to 64K
and displays it in characters that are four screen lines high. You can page
up and down and jump to the beginning and end of the file. Unfortunately, the
program doesn't do word-wrap, so words are split wherever the end of the
screen happens to hit, making reading somewhat difficult. The user can
optionally print the file on an Epson compatible printer at 40 characters per
line. Users interested in this should also see BIGECHO and BIGTEXT, already
in the library.
Lincomatic Banner Maker (LINCBAN)
Lin, Sam
$0
will allow you to make fancy signs which can be printed on any printer.
Unlike some other sign-maker programs, you can choose among many different
fonts (KSET's) or even create your own.
Poster
will make a poster with large letters. You can use your current settings or
change printer settings to meet your specifications. Easy to use.
QDBanner (QDBANNR)
is a Quick and Dirty banner maker consisting of a separate text file for
each character. Each text file consists of a large representation of the
character turned on its side so that when printed one after the other, the
characters string together to form a banner. This one is similar to ALPHABET,
above; it includes character files for about two dozen punctuation and other
marks, such as the dollar sign.
Quick Titles 2.2 (QTITLES)
The Logic Factory
$28-$33
is a very extensive utility for making signs or video screens with fancy
border and a wide variety of fonts - all done in ASCII characters. Unlike
Big-Text (#689), it does not let you create your own fonts, but it offers so
many built in, that the point is almost moot.
Results can be printed or save in various formats: straight ASCII, WordPerfect,
'C', QuickBASIC, Pascal, BBS or FAX. Fonts and borders can be selected on-screen
and text entered in the actual font. The program is fast and easy to use. No
graphics are required, but printing requires a printer that supports the
upper-ASCII characters. (Not on this disk. Ask for disk #8541.)
Super Banner (SBANNER)
Hammonds, Trevor
$?
It will make banners on your printer using your choice of three sizes and fill
letters.

#27051/1191 Label Printing Small Programs Disk
--------------------------
DGLabel 2.04
Gillis, Dale E.
$10
is a label printing program that offers many options, including seperate font
definitions for each line (eg: emphasized expanded on one line, tiny on the
next) and the ability to store a line in memory for use on other labels or to
store labels for later user. DGLabel can be used with all printers, though
use of the different fonts will probably require an Epson compatible printer.
FlexLabl 2.0 (FLEXLBL)
Ford, Nelson ASP
$0
Flex(L)abel is a flexible, general purpose label printing program that should
work with any printer. It also allows you to define and use any special
features your printer may have, such as color, double-high printing, and
different fonts.
Features depend on the capabilities of your printer, but by way of
illustration, with the Epson LQ-850/1050, you can have your choice of 6, 7, or
8 lines per inch; up to eight different character widths and three different
heights, for a total of 24 different print sizes; as many as 20 different
print styles to choose from for each line; optional auto-centering of lines;
optional auto-serializing; and more.
Labels can be saved to disk. Sets of labels can be printed where one or more
lines for each label can be entered from a disk file and any number of labels
printed for each. For example, a software librarian might want to change just
the disk name on each label and print a different number of labels for each
disk name. Or every line of the label could come from a file, such as a
mailing list, and one or more labels printed for each.
Label35 3.1
Wong, Albert
$0
is an easy-to-use program that will produce attractive labels for 3.5"
diskettes.
PMSLabel 1.4 (PMSLBL)
Hastings, Clint
$15
allows you to print mailing labels using graphic pictures from either
PrintMaster or PrintShop. Features include multiple column printing, viewing
of the graphics while selecting which graphic to print, a file requester to
save typing in the graphic file names, multiple printer support, a default
address to be printed, mailing list capabilities, loading of the entire
graphic file into RAM, from one to five text lines per label, color, and a
help screen.
PTLabl3 (PTLABEL)
is a program for printing labels of any size.
WIRLBL
Miller, Paul
$0
allows you to print custom-made labels for all your cables, such as those
found in home audio and video systems, public-address microphone cables,
115-VAC power cables, etc. Requires full-page (8.5"x11") label material which
can be ordered from Computer Label Company, 800-332-4223, (Calif.:
800-331-4223) for $20 per 100 sheets (as of 11/01/88).

#27051/3786 Label Printing #2 Small Programs Disk
-----------------------------
BarLabel 1.0a (BARLABL)
The Data Factory
$39
provides a means of printing Barcodes, Carrier Routes, and +4 zip codes on a
standard 3 1/2 x 15/16 mailing label. You must supply a database in either dBase
III, SDF, and Comma Delimited format. Two sample databases are included. DOS
3.0+ and a dot-matrix printer are required.
BoxLabel (BOXLBL)
Beattie, Martin
$?
is a program that prints an address label for a box or package. You need a
pair of scissors and a glue stick but it's neater than a hand scibbled marking
pen. It creates 2 small files which store the last used return address
(RETLABEL.DAT) and address (ADLABEL.DAT). It will print the top line of each
address in Double Width mode if it will fit, and gives you the option of
centering either or both. It is written and compiled for an Okidata with plug
n' play but if you have Turbo Pascal, you can change the boldon, boldoff and
wideon, wideoff constants to your printer's requirements. If your printer
doesn't produce IBM compatible graphics, you'll also have to change the
topline, middleline, bottomline, lmargin and rmargin procedures.
GenLabel 2.8 (GENLBL)
Forrest, Rob
$5
is a simple but efficient program for running off a set of mailing labels.
While you could do this with most word processors or mailing list programs,
that would be like taking a bus to get across the street.
instantADDRESS 1.0 (INADDRS)
KJL Software
$24
is an 8k TSR which will capture an address from the screen from within most
programs and print it to an envelope or label in two keystrokes.
LabelMate 1.6 (LBLMATE)
GuareGraphics
$15
lets you put a Print Shop graphic on a label with five lines of text
which can have any one of eight preset or user defined fonts or modes
for each line. It handles labels from 1 to 5 inches long, prints a
single label or entire file, and displays up to 14 graphics at a time.
Graphics may be rotated, flipped, or inverted. New PrintShop graphics
are supported. Requires a dot matrix printer and EGA/VGA.
UnderBar 2.2 (UNDRBAR) (08-93 CD)
Binary Systems
$35
is a 2K TSR which prints a Postnet bar code under any address that has a
zip+4 code or a delivery point bar code. This program is automatic and
supports any word processor, mailing list, or database program that you
use. It can also automatically determine the last two digits of the
11-digit Delivery Point Bar Code (DPBC).

#27049/0195 General Printing Utilities Small Programs Disk
--------------------------------------
#0195 Print Spooling
--------------------
DMP 2.05
McGuire, Terry ASP
$29
is a true print spooler to which you can direct printer output so that you can
do other work while the printing is being done. The difference between the
usual print buffer and a spooler is that a buffer program requires you to
allocate as much RAM for buffering printer output as you expect to print
whereas a spooler uses disk files rather than RAM to store the printer output
and, in this case, only takes 12k of RAM for the program itself. DMP will
also direct printer output to a disk file as well as to extended or expanded
memory. DMP will emulate several printers, as well.
MSPool2
multi-spooler: spools up to 4 printers at once.
PControl (PCONTRL)
Sneed, Steve
$0-$10
is a controller for the DOS PRINT.COM spooler utility. This is a memory
resident version that pulls together (by popular demand) three separate,
non-resident utilities on the August 1988 Additions Disk #2.
PRTDS2
is a utility for use with DOS's print spooler. It will display the print
queue and let you add or delete a line.
Spool20
print spooler.
Spool
Newbro, Jeff
$20
is a multi-function print spooler which can perform many sophisticated print
functions. It permits buffer sizes up to the maximum available RAM, printer
redirection, single-shot use, and many other options.
Versa-Spool (V-SPOOL)
Newbro, Jeff
$20
is a print spooler which permits up to three printers to be independently
spooled as background processes.
#0195 Print-To-Disk
--------------------
DiskPr
is another utility to capture printer output to disk. We have several of
these because no one of them seems to work under all conditions.
LPT2Dsk
Bouche, George G.
$?
is another attempt to solve the pesky problem of redirecting printer output to
a disk file. The many existing utilities of this nature already in the
library [General Printer Utilities, 1-PR-195, and Print to Disk, 1-PGa-676]
may or may not work for you, depending on your system. This one tries a
different approach: printer output is buffered. When your program is through
printing, a secondary command processor is invoked by LPT2DSK and the buffered
data written to the disk file. Then you type EXIT to return to your program.
This would seem to get around the problem of DOS not being re-entrant.
LPTX (LPTX301)
attempts to capture printer output in a disk file. Apparently, there are a
lot of complications in writing such a utility. Author Mark C. DiVecchio has
put together a disk full of such utilities that he has studied in writing his
own. The disk, with all of Mark's source code, is available separately in the
assembly language programming section.
Prindir 8.5
Hotz, Michael A.
$20
is a 1k TSR printer redirection utility that allows you to easily select the
destination for printer output, or specify which printer to intercept and
allow other printers to run untouched. You can direct printer output to the
screen or to a file with a keypress. There's support for expanded and extended
memory, and a separate utility for locating unused areas of memory above 640k.
An indicator, toggled with the scroll lock key, is displayed in the corner of
the screen to remind you when printer output is redirected. PsL gives PrinDir
top rating for a general print redirection utility.
VPrint (VPR-DW)
Whitman, David
$?
implements a "virtual printer" by capturing output normally sent to your
printer and redirecting it to a file of your chosing.
#0195 Printer Control
---------------------
Adamas 0.3
Sawada, Dr. Masaaki
$10-$20
is a resident utility that intercepts output to your printer and lets you add
printing features which your word processor normally does not support. res:7k
CTRL-P
Graham, Keith P.
$0
lets you toggle the printer off and on from a batch file.
CPort
Graham, Keith P.
$0
is a universal printer/com port controller. Like MODE with more options
and menus.
FormFeed
sends a formfeed to the printer.
NewPS 2.1
Jelenc, Pierre
$0
is a TSR that will send a formfeed to the printer when you press the right Shift
key with the PrtSc key and do a regular screen dump, but to LPT2, when you press
the left Shift key with PrtSc. It does not affect a PrtSc done without pressing
a Shift key.
Printer Feeder (PFEED2)
Pakin, Scott
$0
lets you send a form feed to the printer by pressing Alt-Shift-F, a line feed
with Alt-Shift-L, or re-initialize the printer with Alt-Shift-I. res:1k
Printer
set-up program that works for any printer.
VPS
is an attempt to provide a generic printer setup utility that may be
configured for any printer that uses escape sequences to control the printer.
There are many good printer setup utilities available, but they usually are
designed to work with a specific model or brand of printer and with a limited
set of escape codes. VPS allows you to define the escape sequences that you
want to use and can be tailored for your specific printer and needs. If you
have more than one printer, you can create setup definitions for each printer
and use VPS as needed to configure each printer based upon the printer
definition you choose.
ZPRT 1.0a
Unique Software ASP
$0
will support any of your printer functions, and you get to decide which ones.
Zprt supports up to 91 different printer functions of up to 14 individual
codes each. Because you enter the control codes, Zprt will work with any
printer.

#27049/2004 Printer Utilities, Other Small Programs Disk
------------------------------------
"Back Up, Tear Off" (BUTO)
is a batch file that moves the paper in a printer up so that you can off
the paper at the perforation. Then at a tap of any key, it makes the paper go
back to where it was. BUTO works on the IBM Proprinter and the Panasonic
Kx-p1092-i printers, although it could be patched for any printer that will do
reverse linefeeds. WARNING: Do not use this with labels as the reverse feed
could cause them to come off inside the printer.
B-Print
Hexagon Products
$0
prints text files using large characters on a dot matrix printer. Fonts range
from 8 to 32 dots per character. It supports Epson and HP formats. It also
supports some formatting commands which consist of a period in column one and
a two letter command. The program is intended for the vision impaired, but
could be used for any kind of printing where large print is desired.
Ctrl-P (CTRLPJB)
Byers, Jeff L.
$0
toggles screen echo to printer on and off. This means that text that
appears on the screen in DOS will be printed as well.
Cursive
Wolter, Jan
$0
converts text entered when running the program into a cursive (or script) font
of about five lines high. The author says that the main use is for generating
cute signatures for email. It has pretty good legibility for being made up of
slashes and other punctuation marks.
Learn-A-Form 2.2 (LRNFRM)
Software Hut
$50
makes it easy to print data into preprinted forms. You insert the form in
your dot matrix printer and move the print head around with the cursor keys to
"teach" the program the location of fields for data to be printed in.
Alternatively, you can give the location of fields with X and Y (ie:
horizontal and vertical) coordinates by placing a template over the form.
After teaching the program the layout of the form, Leran-A-Form will print
data from a file you have created onto the preprinted form. You could
accomplish the same thing with a word processor by preparing a blank file
with dashes where data should go, but Learn-A-Form is a faster and easier way
to do the job.
MapLPT
Swayne, Patrick
$15
maps parallel printer output to a serial port. It surpasses the MODE command
in that it supports baud rates to 38,400 and it supports all forms of
handshaking likely to be required by a printer.
NoInit
keeps printer from reinitializing for BASIC.
NOLF2
traps the extra line feed that some oddball printers (such as some old
Radio Shack printers) can't handle.
PDSwap
Cash, Ted E.
$5
can be popped up at any time to swap between two monitors; monochrome and
color and swap between two printers; LPT1: and LPT2:.
PopType 1.0
Ford, Nelson ASP
$0
is a 10k pop-up utility that can be used to send text to a printer or to the end
of a text file a line at a time. Control codes assigned to function keys can be
used to set the printer. Control codes are user definable.
PopType can be used to address an envelope, print labels of any size, or even to
type a letter - all without leaving the program you are in. In the file mode,
you can add notes to the end of a file, allowing you to keep a running log or to
easily make notes while you test or use another program.
Prnt
Sawada, Dr. Masaaki
$10-$20
is a pop up program that enhances the ability of the PRINT.COM included with
DOS by allowing you to send files to your printer while running another
program. PRNT can also send printer codes/line-text to your printer. This
version needs a CGA card and DOS 3.10 or above.
PRSelect (PRSELCT)
Dexter, James
$?
is a memory resident utility that lets you change between LPT1 and LPT2
without leaving the program you are in.
SetPrn
used in DOS like BASIC's LPRINT command.
SwPtr
swaps LPT1: and LPT2: without unplugging cables.
Typer
Woodruff, Jim
$0
is an electronic typewriter simulator that lets you type a line at a time to
your printer. QB source code is included.

#27839/2730
is an all-purpose label making utility that is fully customizable. It will
print mailing labels, custom disk labels, rolodex-style cards, and lists. It
features save and recall of lists, choice of eight preset or user defined
styles per line, easy transfer of data from list to list, previewing of lists,
set text and text masking, and more. You can manually or automatically tag
entries, then save them to disk. You can preview or print one label, all
tagged entries, or an entire file. It can print all 255 ASCII characters on
most dot matrix printers. This is a powerful program and is easy to use.
Requires DOS 3+.
Barcode
Gavito, Michael
$25
#27839/1065
prints bar codes (code 3 of 9) using most dot-matrix and laser printers,
although on printers that are not Epson-compatible, you need to be able to
enter the control codes from your printer manual into the program.
BlakBook
Tomback, Stephen
$15
#27401/1055
lets you maintain and print multiple 8.5"x5.5" (IBM-size) address books of up
to 528 entries each. Each entry contains a name and description field and six
other fields of up to 66 characters each, with continuation fields available
if needed. Other fields are for the date the entry was created, date changed
and a status field. Pages may be printed by any combination of Name,
Description and Status. Requires a printer capable of 17.2 character-per-inch
print.
FoneBook
PocketWare
$20
#27401/2590
is a personal, pocket-sized, telephone book program. It allows you to maintain a
database of an unlimited number of names, telephone numbers, address, and more.
You can print them in a variety of shapes, sizes, and styles, including a
pocket-size format and on both sides of standard paper. In fact, FoneBook will
print ANY kind of straight text file in these formats.
Other features include an auto-dialer, the ability to sort on the last name,
company name, state, zip, or comment line, and the ability to import files. It
directly supports HP DeskJet Plus, HP LaserJet, and Epson FX series printers
and compatibles and allows customizing for other printers.
Database Publisher
Albala, Neil
$0
#27401/718
lets you store up to 1,000 records per diskette and then, using any dot matrix
printer set to 136 characters per line, it will print on both sides of 8.5 x
11 paper which you can then fold lengthwise and staple to produce an
attractive booklet or brochure.
The program is pretty flexible. For example, you could store short articles as
records and your booklet becomes a magazine. But the most common usage would
probably be as a brochure describing products or services. If you put names
and addresses in the database, the program will also print mailing labels.
(The author is no longer at the address listed in the documentation.)
This is very easy to operate, using function keys for most commands. EGA/VGA and
a dot matrix printer are required. (See section DP-01 for additional disks
containing graphics that are compatible with this program.)
LQ
Harris, Mark ASP
$?
#27404/0658
is a printer font program that will work with most printers by means of a
configuration file. (It comes preconfigured for Epson and compatible
printers.) Among the many features of LQ are a pop-up window for controlling
print at any time; a print spooler especially designed to handle the graphics
output used by LQ to create the fonts; a graphics editor for creating
high-resolution letterheads; a poster-printing program; support for
proportional spacing and micro-justification with PC-Write.
Numerous character sets (fonts) come on the disk. Configuration files are on
the disk for five different printers, but if yours is not one of those, you
can set up your own configuration file.

Wisan, Richard

#27404/0778 (10-93 CD)
is a (non-resident) printer control program designed to work with any printer
by reading the control codes out of a data file. You must be able to figure
out the control codes from your printer's manual and put them into the data
file. Output can be sent to a file instead of a printer. Several related
utilities are included:
"Prn2Both" divides a paged file for printing on both sides of the paper (print
odd pages, turn over, and print even pages on the back). It can make proper
margins and reverse headers and footers if nesessary. Unlike similar programs
in the PSL, this one can handle doc files which do underling, etc, by
inserting into the file backspace characters or carriage returns without
linefeeds.
"Mangler" does minor surgery: inserts FF's, add/strip margin, strips terminal
blanks, breaks files into parts, strips high-bits, removes headers,
Un-paginates, reverses order of pages, and swaps frontsy-backsy around CR's.
"CountPgs" gets information about a file, including: number, length, and width
of pages; and the presence of Left Margin, FF's, tabs, bare CR's, high-bit
(usually graphics) characters, misplaced ^Z's, and oversize pages.
"Pagina" breaks an unpaged file into pages, with or without headers, footers,
and margins. You get a wide variety of choices about the headers and footers.
A string for headers and footers can be entered at runtime. Page numbers can
start with any number and multiple files can be printed at once with
continuous page numbers.
Graphics Label Machine
Spicer, John A.
$20
#27405/4496
prints labels with graphic images on the left side. It can use PrintMaster,
Print Shop, or New Print Shop graphics, and a sample library of images is
included. Features include a true WYSIWYG interface, eight different fonts, line
justification, save and restore options, automatic printing of saved labels, and
more.

#27405/0777
is probably the best general purpose label printing program we have seen.
Among its features are the ability to import data from text files, to address
envelopes (individually or continuous feed, including the option of printing a
return address at the same time!), to use any type font supported by your
printer, to do underlining and variable line spacing, to center text
automatically, to print reports, to print custom items, such as letterheads,
price tags, ID badges, file folder labels, name tags, inventory slips, and to
serialize labels. Mailing labels can be designed to any size, text positioning
(including automatic centering), and with different fonts on each line. Label
formats can be stored on disk and reused. The disk has several sample data
files on it. Supports up to 9-across labels. Also prints rolodex cards, disk
labels, and name tags.
Other features include an easy-to-use, professional-quality text editor that
lets you edit up to six lists simultaneously in a full-screen mode. It
features search/replace and cut/paste capabilities and can read files up to
the available memory of your machine. It also allows up to 10,000 copies of a
label. Support is included for all laser printers, and the ability to print
envelopes and Avery laser labels. Four styles of borders are also included.
It can also print the new PostNet barcode on labels and envelopes.
Label Magic
Albanese, Joseph
$25
#27405/1983
is an excellent labeling system that generates professional looking labels in
minutes, complete with graphic icons. Part of the program is a utility to let
you create your own icons. There is more to this program than logos, however.
You can do mailing lists with or without icons. If your printer can handle
envelopes, you can print your logo and return address directly on envelopes. You
can use it to print letterheads. You can also have alphabetically sorted
directory entries. You can preview the label and icon on screen with Hercules
monographics, CGA, MCGA, EGA, AT&T HiRes, or VGA.
Where many graphics oriented shareware programs are weakest is in the number of
printers they support because each type of printer requires different routines
to print graphics. Label Magic is well above average in this regard, supporting
the C.Tioh 8510, NEC 8023, Epson FX (and compatibles), Epson LX, IBM Graphics,
IBM Proprinter, HP Deskjet and Deskjet Plus, HP LaserJet II, HP PaintJet, Epson
LQ-2500 and Panasonic KX-P1124 printers. (Printer must use parallel port.)
Requires 512k RAM and a hard disk or high capacity drive. DESQview
compatibility. A mouse makes the icon editor easier to use, but is not required.
Also included is TOLM, a utility for converting PrintMaster and Print Shop and
New Printshop icons to Label Magic format. This means that all the graphics on
disks DP-1213, DP-1824 and DP-1825 can be used with Label Magic.
Dale Johnson, Universal City, TX, writes: "When trying to print with Label
Magic, I get a `Runtime error 101'."
Program author Joseph Albanese replies: "That is a `disk write error', which
generally indicates either a write-protected disk or a full disk. Label Magic
requires about 5k of disk space for temporary files."
PRTLabel

#27405/1644
is a powerful and flexible label printing program. You can specify label size,
number of labels across, and printer model. Over 55 printer configuration
files are included, plus you can easily create a customized config file. You
can use fonts such as condensed, double-wide, italics and others. A rather
unique feature of PRTLABEL is that you can draw a border around your message
if your printer supports the line drawing characters of the IBM extended
character set. Labels can be saved and recalled. Labels can also be
serialized.
Postmaster

#27406/3119
is an easy-to-use poster program. It allows you to design your own 22"x
17" posters that print out on 10 pieces of paper which are then pieced
together. It offers a variety of border styles, graphics, and fonts.
PrintLord

#27406/2641
is a banner printing utility with picture printing capability. It contains
dozens of pictures and four different fonts. It will print horizontally or
vertically. The text and graphics are printed using an asterisk ("*") rather
than true graphics, which means that it should work on any printer. The
documentation is very sparse. It appears that you have to Ctrl-Break to exit
the program. You have to view the picture files before defining the banner and
refer to the pictures you want by number.
PrintPartner
Acropolis Software
$20
#27406/2890
is a PrintMaster work-alike that lets you make signs and banners with a variety
of fonts and graphics, as well as full-page block calendars with your choice of
fonts. The program includes 75 high-quality pictures plus a utility that will
convert the hundreds of PrintMaster pictures in the PsL (disks #1213 and #1825).
It also has a very good selection of interesting fonts - 11 altogether. The only
improvement we would suggest would be to add graphics to the calendar printing
function.
PrintPartner supports most dot matrix printers directly by choosing one from a
list. We used an Epson LQ-850, which wasn't on the list, but which worked fine
when we selected a different Epson printer model instead.

#27406/2969
prints text in your choice of several different type faces and sizes on an
Epson compatible dot matrix printer. The text is entered on a scrolling page
on the screen. A banner making program using the same type faces is included.
With a mouse, several drawing functions are available for adding graphics. The
output on our Epson LQ-850 is not very dark. Gaps were left in the output
unless we switched the printer to the eight lines-per-inch mode.

#12340 (08-93 CD)
is a (2k) TSR that prints five and nine digit Bar Codes and also Zip+4
codes. It stays in memory and watches for your programs to print zip
codes. When it spots one preceded by a caret mark ("^"), it switches
your printer to graphics mode and prints a bard code.
It will work with font cartridges and downloaded soft fonts. However, it
will not work with programs that send graphics page layouts to the
printer instead of characters. The program can only print 100 bar code
labels without reloading the TSR, so it is not suitable for printing
large jobs, but is useful for adding barcodes to the occasional letter
envelope.

#2539
is a printer control utility for all types of printers including dot-matrix,
ink-jet, laser, and even plotters. It can be used as a 17k-27k pop-up,
allowing it to be used from within any word processor or other types of
programs. Drivers are included for most types of printers or you can create
your own. It supports LPT1-3 and COM1-4. An HP LaserJet printer driver has
been updated to control practically all LaserJet functions. HP DeskJet Plus
and IBM 4019 Laser drivers have been added.
